Most of the authors I listed have works that are the first few webnovels to get translated and one of the first few that I’ve read.

So I may be biased as there are now many works released and if I look back at their work again, I might have a completely different sentiment.

Have you ever read a webnovel and realized that it is extremely similar to some of the webnovels you have read? Chances are they are by the same author.

This patriarch will talk about 10 Authors that have the best writing styles and their works.

10. Author: Shi Luo Ye (失落叶)

Shi luo Ye

[Works]

English Translated:

Zhan Long (946/1379) [On-going Translation]

VRMMO: The Unrivaled (333/1599) [On-going Translation]

Virtual World: Conquering the World (105/1173) [On-going Translation]

Virtual World: The Legendary Thief (170/633) [On-going Translation]

The Alchemist God (226/1291) [On-going Translation]

Skyroad (18/790) [Translation stopped for awhile now]

Legend of the Sword King (1/1189) [Translation stopped for awhile now]

[Works]

Untranslated works:

极品菜鸟 [High Grade Rookie] (189 Chapters)

剑舞 [Sword Dance] (50 Chapters Dropped)

市邪剑仙 [City’s Evil Sword Immortal] (288 Chapters)

小蜜万岁 [Long Live Xiaomi] (32 Chapters Dropped)

斗神 [Fighting God] (393 Chapters)

Overview:

Ignoring the fact that most VRMMO novels out there are based on the reincarnation troupe, where they get betrayed and lost everything just to return back in time to start all over again.

If you have read quite early, in the beginning, these types of novels are still not translated yet and the only rare few VRMMO novel out there was Zhan Long. That was at the forefront of the translations during that period. If you went back and read Zhan Long after the recent influx of reincarnation VRMMO novels, I think you might not be able to take it.

He is an extremely experienced writer that ventured various genres, such as modern world cultivation (long live Xiaomi), xianxia (legend of the sword king). However, his best works are still those belonging to the VRMMO world.

Writing Habits:

From the webnovels that I’ve read that belong to him, he has a few notable stereotypes that he loves to write upon. First, he loves to start off his novel with the Protagonist and a Beautiful girl that most likely starts the plot. Oh, and the girl belongs to a rich background.

Next, the girl would drag him to start out a studio that he would eventually join, which is then filled with another group of beautiful girls, and yea, harem begins.

On the VRMMO side, he usually gets some overpowered item or ability that grants him the ability to one-hit the enemy. So most of the fight against his enemies are like that. Also, the enemies usually are ‘rich’ and throw a lot of money into the game.

There would also often be fights that are against huge numbers of players like 10 versus 100 or something of the sort. While he is insanely op, some of the times, the female characters just drag the mc around.

Most of his VRMMO books also revolve quite a bit around a guild. However, most of his works are ‘illogical’ and ridiculous. If you want to find a scientific explanation for webnovels, you might want to take a look at other authors.

However, if you like op mc against the world and ‘lucky’ encounters with extremely summarized fights, plus a huge harem, his works are great for you!

9. Author: Fang Xiang (方想)

Fang Xiang

[Works]

English Translated:

World of Cultivation (915/915) [Completely Translated]

The Card Apprentice (617/617) [Completely Translated]

Legend of the Supreme Soldier (607/607) [Completely Translated]

Undefeated God of War (943/943) [Completely Translated]

The Avalon of Five Elements (173/173) [Completely Translated]

[Works]

Untranslated works:

星风 [Stellar Wind] (32 Chapters Dropped)
龙城 [Dragon City] (241 Newest book, still writing)

Overview:

If you have not read any one of his works, don’t need to hesitate anymore, you should just google any one of his work and read it. Guaranteed no regrets.

Anyway, Fang Xiang has all the best books I’ve read, and also those that read long enough should have at least seen World of Cultivation. This author produces entirely new and creative ideas that are the very opposite of cliché. Every single book that he releases is of a different genre, but guess what?

In my opinion, world of cultivation – is a genre by itself, card apprentice is another genre by itself. They are one of a kind. Even Legend of the supreme soldier is the recommended book when it comes to finding a mecha book to read in china (well, I think one of the reason is the scarcity of this genre)

Writing habits:

The first thing that captures your attention when you read all his books is that he does not over-glorify the main character. Usually, the author would place their fantasy on the character they write about.

However, Fang Xiang does not go, “Shiny eyes, beautiful hair, 180cm” bla bla bla. But the main character is average-looking, or even sometimes ugly. Honestly, you don’t find many Chinese authors giving average-looking appearances to the protagonist.

Next would be his books all have a unique element, you will not feel that “oh I read about this type of thing before”. Take card disciple, for example, the main theme literally cards, creating and using them as your ability. Even for a cliché theme like the cultivation world, he uses different sets of cultivation systems.

Character development is something you will see in every of his work. However, he seems to like money-grubber personalities haha. Most of the characters get some development here and there and they do not get thrown aside like most novels (maybe that is why his stories are less than 1000 chapters).

If you want to get rid of the bad taste that you just read, try anyone of his books out and you will feel great after. There is a reason all his books are completely translated.

8.Author: Mars Gravity (火星引力)

mars gravity

[Works]

English Translated:

Against the Gods (1767) [On-going Translation]

Legend of Asura (88/742) [On-going Translation]

Heavenly Star (330/556) [On-going Translation]

Online Game: Evil Dragon Against the Heaven (536/1265) [Translation halted]

Shura’s Wrath (850/850) [Completely Translated]

[Works]

Untranslated works:

-None-

Overview:

Most of mars gravity books are actually VRMMO, when he started writing against the gods, it is actually his first time writing a typical Xuanhuan webnovel. However, it did not disappoint me (might be bad for some people because of his tastes).

But even for against the gods, the world-building, plot, characters are still awfully similar to his previous works. It might be good and got a big chance that it will leave a bad taste in your mouth.

Writer Habits:

One thing to note is that he loves to write on loli characters. Even he admitted it himself. Also, all his books will have this 1 female lead that follows him from the start.

Big female dramas – all his protagonist will get betrayed by a female that helped him for a few hundred chapters at least. Which makes you very angry. They will still get back together though, or at least he gives a reasonable excuse for their betrayal.

In mars’ webnovels, the harem is usually filled with all kinds of races and even the relationships you would never expect out of. Basically every female he meets, older sister, teacher, goddesses, princess, he will never let them go hehe.

7.Author: North Night(夜北)

North Night

[Works]

English Translated:

The Good for Nothing Seventh Young Lady (2641/2759) [Ongoing Translation]

Unprecedented Pill Refiner: Entitled Ninth Young Lady / The Indomitable Master of Elixirs (1045/1286) [On-going Translation]

Rebirth of the Strongest Female Emperor / Rebirth of the Strongest Empress (1390/2761) [On-going Translation]

Genius Doctor: Black-Belly Miss (3123/3123) [Completely Translated]

[Works]

Untranslated Works:

邪王独宠:悍妃很嚣张 [Evil King’s Favourite: The Concubine is very arrogant] (266 chapters, dropped by author)

凤鸾九霄 [Phoenix Peaks the Clouds] (758 chapters, on-going)

Overview

North Night and another popular author of the same genre is Xiao Qi Ye. They are both writers that write about a female protagonist transmigrating to the cultivation work.

Generally, what you would imagine a world where strong reigns and cultivation, you would rarely think about having a female main character as it is filled with social path killers. Might be a concept deeply ingrained into our minds by the various webnovels such as Martial God Asura.

However, it feels great to read about a female protagonist as it usually consists of them being extremely cunning and scheming, that you will never see in a normal webnovel. I feel that as a female protagonist, it opens up a whole new way of writing.

If you have not tried, and want to experience some cute moments in a web novel, try reading one or two of them.

Writer Habits:

Honestly, it applies to most novels with similar concepts. Usually, the author loves to write about the main protagonist taking over an “ugly” or “disabled” female character that is outcasted by the clan.

Together with the personality change, the protagonist would then suddenly be discovered by a freaking handsome and perfect male lead with a mysterious background who thinks that it is due to her hiding deeply.

She would then reveal her fangs and solve the desperate situation, followed by an adventure with a large group of beautiful and handsome men that will always pop up and follow her.

Then there will be an arc of “growing up and making friends” followed by the rest of a sinister and deeper plot. Usually, the first male lead that appears will disappear for a few hundred chapters or only appears occasionally when she is desperate.

Also, it somehow feels that the characters that the author writes are somehow more clever and cunning than the rest of the webnovels out there. Maybe because the protagonist is female.

6. Author: Mao Ni (猫腻)

Mao ni

[Works]

English Translated:

Joy of Life (746/746) [Completely Translated]

The Outcast (43/1008) [Translation stopped for awhile]

Nightfall (1118/1118) [Completely Translated]

Way of Choices / Fighter of Destiny / Ze Tian Ji (1184/1184) [Completely Translated]

The Path Toward Heaven (840/840) [Completely Translated]

[Works]

Untranslated works:

朱雀记 (7 Volumes) [Legend of the Phoenix]

Overview:

Mao Ni’s work has been adapted to popular Xian Xia dramas numerous times, Nightfall, Way of choices, and Joy of life. The works that he produces always comes with a moral lesson. Most of them will show stunning character personalities and resolutions. Which most other novels do not comes with.

The adversity and challenges faced by all his protagonist will eventually lead to a slow-paced growth, which I believe is the main focus rather than all the cultivation. You would feel extremely gratified while reading the novel until the end.

Writer Habits:

As noted previously, he is prone to be slow-paced and show the challenges the main protagonist goes through step by step. Most of the time, when he reaches even the doorstep of cultivation, it is at least 50 chapters in. However, he provides many character development processes that most webnovels would lack.

Most of his webnovels seem more of a moral lesson than a cultivation novel. The emotions of the protagonist would greatly resonate and impact you as you carry on reading. Which I believe is the reason for most of his novels gaining drama adaptation.

He also tends to leave a lot of confusion in the readers, but if you read till the end there will be the “oh so it’s like this”.

Overall, he is a great author if you like a slow-paced character development focused novel.

5. Author: Chen Dong (辰东)

Chen Dong

[Works]

English Translated:

Perfect World (1981/2015) [On-going Translation]

Shrouding the Heavens (7/1822) [On-going Translation]

World of Immortals (244/688) [Halted Translations]

The Sacred Ruins (823/1421) [Halted Translations]

Shen Mu (30/404) [Halted Translations]

[Works]

Untranslated Works:

不死不灭 (10 Volumes) [Immortal]

Overview:

Chen Dong is one of the more popular authors in china, that wrote a few hit titles in china, Perfect World, and Sacred Ruins. Because of his writing style, especially for Shen Mu, it seemed to not have as much love from the rest of the world as compared to China. If you hate reading unnecessary fillers or rather, extremely long descriptions. His novels might not sit well with you.

Writing Habits:

Chen Dong likes to produce extremely unique world-settings or cultivation systems. Which results in it being confusing, there might not be a clear set of system to follow. Unlike what you would normally read such as Qi condensation, his cultivation system seems out of nowhere and does not have a fixed standard.

However, he always has a good storyline and plot written to back up the unique cultivation system. But he tends to include many unnecessary words in the webnovels he writes. Also, there would always be a small harem to it.

If you like to read webnovels with a unique cultivation system, always look for Chen Dong novels, however, they also cause lots of confusion in the first few chapters because of the lack of explanation for his cultivation systems.

4. Author : Er Gen (耳根)

Er Gen

English Translated:

A World Worth Protecting (836/ 1001) [Ongoing Translation]

A Will Eternal (1314/1314) [Completely Translated]

Pursuit of the Truth (1481/1481) [Completely Translated]

Renegade Immortal / Xian Ni (968/2088) [Translation halted]

I Shall Seal the Heavens (1613/1613) [Completely Translated]

Untranslated Works:

Against Heaven (118) [Dropped by author]

Overview:

Er Gen is an extremely popular author in our hearts, compared to the people of China. All his works are top-class from our tastes, A will eternal, ISSTH, A world worth protecting if you google any of this, you would find an overwhelming amount of positive responses.

However, he does not earn as much compared to the other authors in China. But, I believe that as audiences, we should keep supporting him and read all his webnovels. Especially when our favorite few webnovels are all written by him.

Furthermore, if you read starting from renegade immortal to the newest A world worth protecting, you would have realized how much he had grown in terms of writing skills, which I would elaborate further.

Writing Habits:

First, most of his novels will have this particular female lead that will follow him from the start till the end and appear only occasionally with power-ups here and there. Although there is not much interaction with the female lead, the protagonist seems to fall in love with her.

Next,  it would be COMEDY, yes if you had read his novels he had grown a lot in writing comedy, he seems to be getting better and better at them. The latest 2 works, a will eternal and a world worth protecting are the funniest work that you will ever find in the cultivation world.

Also, there would always be “alchemy and pill concocting” in his webnovels if you realized. It is also one of my personal favorite genres.

Overall, if you haven’t read anyone of his webnovels, you had just lost out in a lot.

3. Author: Wo Chi Xi Hong Shi (I Eat Tomatoes/ 我吃西红柿)

Archean Eon Art (233/500 +) [Translation On-going]

[Works]

Untranslated works:

-None-

Overview:

I have an inherent bias towards this author as Coiling Dragon was my first ever CN webnovel that sent me on the Path of Webnovel. I’m pretty sure most of you are the same. I Eat Tomatoes is a wonderful author, all of his work can be classified as different genres yet they do not fail to live up to the expectation of being the webnovels of I Eat Tomatoes. Most of his works have snatched a few of the top spots in the Webnovels ranking scene.

Writer Habits:

I Eat Tomatoes is known for his exceptionally fast and professional production of his Web novels. Which might result in a lack of depth and leaking of some plot holes and plot progression

All the protagonists in his stories only have one true love, but it is also not the main plot of the story. However, because having written so many webnovels, you will realize that he tends to recycle many of his plots from different novels. But they are still portrayed differently.

He also has great world-building abilities, most of his novels have multiple realms, despite what seems to be a small world, will turn out and be revealed into a much larger one.

Although he wrote many different genres, each is the representation of his different “dreams”, most still have the same core. A further breakdown of his books would be:

Futuristic – Swallowed Star, Inch of Radiance

XuanHuan – Stellar Transformation, Lord Xue Ying, Archean Eon Art

Medieval World – Desolate Era

Xianxia – Seeking the Flying sword Path, Legend of Xing Feng

Wuxia – The Nine Cauldrons

Eastern Fantasy – Coiling Dragon

2. Author: Tian Can Tu Dou (Heavenly Silkworm Potato/ 天蚕土豆)

Battle Through the Heavens (1648/1648) [Completely Translated]

Wu Dong Qian Kun (1319/1319) [Completely Translated]

[Works]

Untranslated Works:

魔兽剑圣异界纵横 [Otherworldly Sword Saint of the Demonic Beasts] (714 chapters)

Overview:

Heavenly Silkworm potato is known for Battle through the heavens, especially all his works share the same universe. The main protagonist of the novels also meets in The Great Ruler. He is consistent in all his writings and most of the novels will produce the same feeling when you read.

In addition, Battle through the heavens has a manhua with amazing art, a drama with a great storyline. While The Great Ruler also has a drama adaptation.

Writer Habits:

In all his works, I’ve noticed that he love to write a female protagonist from the start. While the main character will have some sort of “loss of talent”, she will be the one that believes in him when he is at his lowest point. This is because, during their childhood, the main character has unconditionally saved her or helped her.

Next, he seems to love the battle academy theme, as most of his works have a battle academy arc that lasts a few hundred chapters, it is more like a “sect” rather than an academy as there is just club creation and mission done.

Finally, the main protagonist would have a mysterious background or some hidden power from his ancestor that makes it easier for him to progress, a sort of talent. Then in all the novels, there would be a scene that the main girl that followed him from the beginning will suddenly be called back to her mysterious clan with a tremendous background that the main character needs to get stronger, in order for him to find her.

If all the description excites you, any one of the webnovels he wrote would interest you!

守护时光守护你 (Protecting you and time) (12 Chapters) – 2018

隔河千里,秦川知夏 ( River flows a thousand miles, Qin Chuan and Zhi Xia) (59 chapters) – 2019

Overview:

As you can see, he is an author for more than 16 years now, ever since his first work, child of light, the improvement in writing starting from the kind death god is tremendous. All the works have a shared “god realm” universe that most protagonists will probably meet there.

He is also a sentimental person as he had made a few books on his life story and the people around him that are not translated. Furthermore, if you had realized, most of his webnovels actually have a manga or game adaptation.

Tang Jia San Shao is my personal best author in regard to his writings that never fail to make me feel damn good. He also loves to use special things as the main theme that you do not see often, giving off the unique world-setting in his webnovels. Apart from the traditional Douluo dalu, he takes the 12 zodiacs, a chef, a zither, jewels as his inspirations.

If he continues writing, you would probably find a few more special webnovels out there. By the way, as if it’s not already obvious, TJSS is the most famous author and a pioneer in the webnovel genre in China together with his few works.

Writer Habits:

This man is the best in my opinion because he is able to turn what is typically regarded as “strong rule the weak” world into such a warm-hearted read. Regardless of whatever tragedy the main character faces. There always seems to be the “shiny” feeling in the book and not the “dark” where there are killing everywhere.

I have never seen anything apart from TJSS that gives me such a warm and light-hearted feeling. Not just one book, but all his webnovels gives that particular feeling.

First,  all his main characters are the most handsome in their universe. Followed by the protagonist being devoted to only one female lead (Heavenly Jewel Change is an exception). Also, the cultivation system in all his webnovels are well planned. They do not have any inconsistencies, unlike Chen Dong’s worlds.

Most of the plot progression eventually will lead to the main protagonist ascending to TJSS’s God Realm.

Also, he seems to love writing about a protagonist with charismatic and leadership abilities, and there will always be team fights which most if not all webnovels do not have.

Overall, I cannot imagine anyone else being the best webnovel author apart from this man.
